Honoring Excellence in Breast Cancer Research and Advocacy: Meet the 2024 Susan G. Komen Award Recipients 

Susan G. Komen recently honored five exceptional individuals for their transformative contributions to breast cancer research, treatment and advocacy. The Brinker Awards, Rising Star Researcher Award and Research Advocacy Champion Award are some of Komen’s highest honors in research, recognizing leaders who are advancing efforts to save lives and improve patient outcomes. 

Established in 1992, Komen’s Brinker Awards for Scientific Distinction recognize pioneering work in breast cancer research and treatment. These awards honor leading scientists for their significant achievements and contributions in basic and translational science and clinical practice that have advanced the fight to save lives and realize our vision of a world without breast cancer.

The Susan G. Komen Rising Star Researcher Award has been established to recognize innovative work and leadership in breast cancer research and treatment. This award focuses on investigators whose work has the potential to significantly impact the breast cancer field and who demonstrate strong leadership potential in the breast cancer community. 

Each recipient has made groundbreaking strides in their respective fields, from redefining breast cancer risk and treatment to championing research advocacy.  

Christina Curtis, Ph.D., M.Sc. 
Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Basic Science 

Christina Curtis has revolutionized the understanding of the molecular landscape of breast cancer. Her innovative work has led to the development of biomarkers that enable precise classification of patients into risk groups, paving the way for personalized treatment plans. By exploring previously uncharted parts of the genome, her computational methods have also advanced predictions of tumor progression, helping to tailor treatments that maximize effectiveness while minimizing side effects. 

Fabrice André, M.D., Ph.D. 
Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Clinical Research 

A global leader in precision oncology, Fabrice André has transformed how breast cancer is treated through groundbreaking clinical trials. His research has established international guidelines for personalized treatment based on genetic and immune profiling. André’s efforts have extended the reach of precision medicine to include patients with advanced breast cancer, improving detection and treatment outcomes while mitigating toxicities. 

Graham A. Colditz, M.D., Dr.P.H. 
Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Population Science 

As the first recipient of this new award category, Graham Colditz has led studies that illuminate the genetic and lifestyle factors influencing breast cancer risk. His work has resulted in widely used risk assessment tools that guide screening and prevention strategies. By addressing health disparities and inspiring lifestyle changes, Colditz has empowered individuals worldwide to take proactive steps in reducing their cancer risk. 

Mina S. Sedrak, M.D., M.S. 
Rising Star Researcher Award 

Mina Sedrak’s innovative research focuses on the intersection of cancer and aging, particularly the effects of breast cancer treatments on older patients. His studies have improved clinical trial inclusion for older adults and identified interventions to combat treatment-induced accelerated aging. Sedrak’s work aims to enhance the quality of life and independence of patients and survivors, offering new hope for those most vulnerable. 

Virginia (Ginny) Mason, R.N., B.S.N. 
Research Advocacy Champion Award 

Ginny Mason’s dedication to advocacy has brought inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) to the forefront of research and patient care. Her 20+ years of work have led to the establishment of national treatment guidelines and significant advancements in IBC diagnosis and funding. Mason’s efforts ensure that patient perspectives remain integral to the scientific dialogue, improving outcomes for those affected by this rare form of breast cancer.
