Survivor

I have survived what I thought would kill me

I am a one-year survivor, just relatively fresh off of surgery #4 in my healing journey. ER/PR+, HER2-. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma was picked up on mammogram in July 2023. Then came the bilateral mastectomy the following month, where Invasive Lobular Carcinoma was discovered. In December 2023, after consulting with my oncologist and uro-gynocologist about the remaining cancer risks related to estrogen production, I opted for complete hysterectomy with removal of my ovaries (which, consequently, plunged me into immediate menopause and non-stop hateful hot flashes.) In March 2024 I began the reconstructive process with tissue expanders placed, followed by bi-weekly “inflations” of the expanders with the goal of “growing skin” to accommodate the implants that would complete the process (hopefully!). On September 3, 2024, at long last, I underwent surgery to place my permanent implants. I had no interest in preserving the nipple/areola complex–in my mind it’s just more breast tissue that I would have to worry about. So, out with the nips! I do not regret any step of my journey– I stepped onto this journey’s path armed with knowledge and being well informed. I feel AMAZING today; I have my Rack Pack team behind me, my family and friends behind me, and am ready to step off in San Diego this November for 3 amazing days of celebration.
