Sally Bates
Survivor
Sally Bates, three-time breast cancer survivor, has been at the heart of the daily operations for the Des Moines Race for the Cure® for almost 15 years. Sally has also turned her volunteering into a family affair: Sally’s sons, Chris and Jeremy, have assisted in preparing for the race for several years; her daughter-in-law, Jenni, has dedicated many years to the cause; and her grandsons, Sam and Cole (11 and 13), have grown up helping out at the Race office.
Sally’s greatest supporter, both in her recoveries and her volunteering efforts, has been her husband, Dennis. Like many spouses, Dennis has supported Sally by keeping their household running while she has been focusing her energies on Komen.
Although Sally “retired” several years back, she has worked full-time on data entry and running the Affiliate office during Race season for several years. A past treasurer and grants chair, she has helped guide new Race chairs and provided consistency to Affiliate and Race processes and plans.
